On Wednesday 19th of May a combined year 10 and 11-cricket team made the short journey across to Batley Grammar school to play in an inter school cricket match. The two sides were to compete in a 25 overs game, with bowlers allowed only 5 overs each.
The hosts batted first, finishing their innings on 170-5. Notable BBEC bowling performances included a 3-wicket haul from Riyaz Katharada who swung the ball nicely from the sports hall end and Adeel Pakwashee who bowled tightly from the other end finishing with two well-deserved wickets.

In the field, James Keen tried particularly hard to keep the byes to a minimum with some lively and enthusiastic bowling from the BBEC attack that found it hard to control the swinging ball. Asif Laher also contributed greatly with some fine stops including one outstanding 'knee stop' which caused great amusement for the rest of the team. It was then BBEC batsman's turn to use the fantastic wicket. James Keen and Arshad Navsarka began the reply getting away with some sensible batting. Arshad in particular played some nice drives and rotated the strike regularly to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Unfortunately for the BBEC team, Keen got himself out, mistiming a short delivery for a simple caught and bowled dismissal. That brought the Batley Boys skipper to the crease.
Shaid Akhtar or 'Shed' as he is affectionately known at BBEC, started his innings as he would end it, smashing several deliveries to the mid wicket boundary and some to the long off boundary. The action didn't end there, Shed then really warmed up. No longer was he content with just hitting fours he began to unleash some massive blows for six including several strikes that clattered into the sports hall wall.
His half-century came up in no time and he soon turned this into a sublime century with some more massive hits. The Grammar school attack were not gifting Shaid at all, he was just batting exceptionally well. With two overs still to bowl the BBEC team managed to pass the total scored by the hosts.
With the Grammar school Headmaster Mr Battye watching from the boundary, the end came with great comfort for Mr McMahon. Shaid had dented the Sports hall corrugated wall a great deal of times and he could see a repair bill making its way over to the P.E. department at BBEC. A fantastic result for the team. What a way to finish five great years at BBEC. Congratulations to Mr Ahktar on his first century, a magnificent achievement.
BBEC Chess Club
Congratulations go to Gary Cox, Rizwan Attaulah, Sohail Khan, Ismail Salu, Stefan Hesford-Holgate, Aadil Mamaniat, Shane Eggett, Dean Farnhill and Peter and Jason Beaumont, who all won through to the regional final of the British Land U.K Chess Challenge. This was played in Rotherham and Mr. Wright acted as chauffeur and chaperone for the day. Peter Beaumont won his group and will be playing at the semi-final at Manchester University. Peter has just finished his GCSEs and we all wish him well both in the competition and his future.
The summer in-school chess competition results were: equal third: Anis Rawat and Rizwan Attaulah, second place went to Peter Beaumont and Ismail Salu took first place. Ismail is turning into a very good chess player and we look forward to some of his skills rubbing off onto the up and coming young players.
