Batley Business & Enterprise College- The George Locke Years

A new secondary school for Batley boys was proposed by amalgamating Batley Technical School, Bankfield Boys School and Healey Boys School.

Batley High School for Boys was built by the West Riding Council at a cost of £255,937 for the buildings and £12,514 for associated site works.

Mr G. C. Locke took up his appointment as the first Head teacher of Batley Business & Enterprise College on Monday, April 13th 1959.

Batley Business & Enterprise College opened for 'business' on Wednesday 9th September 1959 with a roll of 860 pupils.

Sir John Hunt officially opened Batley Business & Enterprise College on Thursday, 10th March 1960.

On September 5th, 1960, the school opens for its second year with an increased roll, 958 pupils, and a small sixth form.

Sunday July 12th 1964 was the official opening of the Country Activities Centre, known to hundreds of Batley Lads simply as 'The Hut', at Stainforth in the Yorkshire Dales.

The building is in fact a redundant cricket pavilion from White Lee. July 1969, Mr G. C. Locke leaves Batley Business & Enterprise College to take up a new appointment as Head teacher of Brooksbank Comprehensive School in Elland.
