A
valuable part of life in Year 11 is the work experience programme in
the Autumn term. This is a valuable chance for
students to exchange the classroom for the workplace by spending a
week in unpaid Work Experience. Employers
have a lot to offer. There will be a wide range of opportunities
including retail, clerical, information technology, education,
leisure and industry. Pupils are given thorough preparation
for this to ensure they are placed in suitable locations. Miss Duffy
is the staff member responsible for the operation of Work Experience,
but your usual first point of contact is your form tutor who should
be able to answer many of your questions.
The practical benefits of this experience of ‘life beyond school’ are many:
To learn new skills
To meet new people
To gain an insight into the world of work and Employer requirements
To be treated as a responsible adult
Work experience is organised as part of our curriculum. Students have the opportunity to select the type of work that is of interest to them. However, some areas of work are oversubscribed so alternative choices have to be made. If you would like to make a student arranged placement, then your child should complete the appropriate form from school and ask the prospective employer to complete it. A Kirklees representative then makes a visit to ensure the suitability of the placement and checks that the employer has the necessary insurance cover.
We shall prepare your child in every way possible for this opportunity and we ask that you give your full support in chatting to them about what type of placements they feel would be most suitable for them.
Students have all been given a booklet which sets out the aims and what they should hope to achieve, plus numerous information sheets.
When on their placement, they will be expected to complete a work experience record book detailing their daily experiences. At the end of the placement, the employer will complete a report on the students work which they will be able to bring back to school with them. This will be inserted in the students Record of Achievement
